These tender, thick, and chewy chocolate chip cookies feature a perfect balance of buttery richness, melty chocolate chunks, and a sprinkle of flaky sea salt for a delightful sweet and salty contrast. Quick and easy to make, they are perfect for any occasion and a crowd-pleaser.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ½ cups (315 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (226 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • ¾ cup (150 g) packed brown sugar
  • ¼ cup (50 g) granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 2 cups (340 g) chocolate chips or chunks (semisweet or mix of semi and bittersweet)
  • About 1 teaspoon flaky sea salt, for sprinkling on top

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate large bowl, beat the softened butter with brown sugar and granulated sugar until fluffy and pale, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then add the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing on low speed or folding with a spatula until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Fold in the chocolate chips gently to distribute evenly.
  7. Using a large cookie scoop or spoon, drop dough onto the prepared baking sheets in 12 equal portions, spacing about 2 inches apart.
  8. Lightly sprinkle flaky sea salt evenly over the tops of the dough balls.
  9. Bake for 12 to 14 minutes until edges are golden but centers are still soft.
  10. Let cookies rest on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack to cool completely.

Notes

For thicker cookies, chill the dough for at least 30 minutes before baking. Avoid overmixing after adding flour to keep cookies tender. Use flaky sea salt on top for a perfect sweet-salty contrast. You can substitute all-purpose flour with gluten-free baking flour for a gluten-free version, and replace butter with coconut oil and eggs with flax eggs for a vegan option.
