These spooky witch finger pretzel rods are the perfect blend of creepy and delicious. Easy enough for kids to help with, but impressive enough to steal the show at any Halloween party.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 standard 12-ounce bag pretzel rods (about 2024 rods)
  • 2 cups white chocolate chips or melting wafers (about 12 ounces)
  • 1/4 cup sliced almonds
  • Red food coloring gel (optional, for a bloody effect)
  • Green food coloring gel or oil-based candy coloring (optional, for a green tint)
  • Wax paper or parchment paper

Instructions

  1. Prepare your workstation. Line a large baking sheet with wax paper or parchment paper. Make sure you have enough space to lay out all the pretzel rods without them touching.
  2. Melt the white chocolate. Place the white chocolate chips or melting wafers in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring thoroughly after each interval, until the chocolate is smooth and completely melted. This usually takes about 1.5 to 2 minutes total. Do not overheat.
  3. Optional: Tint the chocolate. If you want green witch fingers, add a few drops of green oil-based candy coloring to the melted white chocolate and stir until evenly colored.
  4. Dip the pretzel rods. Hold a pretzel rod by one end and dip it into the melted chocolate, rotating it to coat about two-thirds of the rod. Let any excess chocolate drip back into the bowl.
  5. Create the knobby knuckles. Place the dipped pretzel on the prepared baking sheet. Use a small offset spatula or the back of a spoon to gently press and create two or three raised ridges along the chocolate-covered portion.
  6. Add the fingernail. Immediately press a sliced almond onto the tip of the pretzel rod, pointed end facing outward. Press gently so it sticks into the chocolate.
  7. Add wrinkles and veins. While the chocolate is still soft, use a toothpick to draw thin lines and wrinkles around the knuckles and along the sides of the finger.
  8. Optional: Add a bloody effect. If you want a more gruesome look, dip the tip of a toothpick in red food coloring gel and lightly drag it around the base of the almond fingernail and along a few of the wrinkles.
  9. Let them set. Allow the pretzels to sit at room temperature until the chocolate is completely firm. This takes about 30 minutes to an hour.
  10. Repeat. Continue with the remaining pretzel rods until all are coated and decorated.

Notes

The most important thing when working with white chocolate is temperature. Melt slowly and stir frequently. If chocolate seizes, add a teaspoon of coconut oil or vegetable shortening and stir vigorously. For best results, do not refrigerate the finished pretzels as condensation can dull the chocolate. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.
