purple witches brew punch - featured image

A tart, fizzy, and just sweet enough Halloween punch with a deep purple color and real dry ice fog that spills over the edges of the bowl. Made with real fruit juices and fresh citrus, this crowd-pleasing centerpiece is as delicious as it is dramatic.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups white grape juice
  • 2 cups pineapple juice (unsweetened)
  • 1 cup fresh squeezed lemon juice (about 45 large lemons)
  • ½ cup fresh squeezed lime juice (about 34 limes)
  • 1 cup blueberry juice (unsweetened)
  • ¼ cup simple syrup (optional, for sweeter punch)
  • 4 cups ginger ale, chilled
  • Ice ring or ice cubes
  • 23 pounds dry ice
  • Sliced lemons, limes, or frozen blueberries for garnish (optional)
  • Edible glitter (optional)

Instructions

  1. Make the punch base (up to 24 hours ahead): In a large pitcher or mixing bowl, combine 4 cups white grape juice, 2 cups pineapple juice, 1 cup fresh lemon juice, ½ cup fresh lime juice, and 1 cup blueberry juice. Stir well. Taste and add ¼ cup simple syrup if desired. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.
  2. Prepare the ice ring (optional, day before): Fill a ring mold or small bundt pan halfway with water. Add lemon slices, lime slices, and a few fresh or frozen blueberries. Freeze until solid, then add more water to fill the mold and freeze completely.
  3. Chill the ginger ale: Place the ginger ale in the refrigerator at least 4 hours before serving.
  4. Get the dry ice ready (within 2 hours of serving): Pick up dry ice on the day of the party. Store it in a cooler with the lid slightly cracked. Wear gloves when handling.
  5. Assemble the punch (right before serving): Pour the chilled punch base into a large punch bowl (at least 2-gallon capacity). Add the ice ring or a generous amount of ice cubes. Slowly pour in 4 cups of chilled ginger ale. Stir gently to combine.
  6. Add the dry ice fog (immediately before guests arrive): Using tongs or gloved hands, carefully add 2-3 small chunks of dry ice (about the size of a golf ball each) to the punch. The fog will start pouring out immediately.
  7. Maintain the fog effect: Add fresh dry ice chunks every 10-15 minutes as needed throughout the party. One pound of dry ice typically lasts about 20-30 minutes in a punch bowl.
  8. Safety: Do not let anyone drink the punch until all dry ice has completely sublimated (disappeared). Stir the punch vigorously to release any remaining gas before serving. For continuous fog effect, use a separate small bowl of dry ice next to the punch bowl.

Notes

Dry ice safety is paramount: never touch with bare skin, never swallow, and never store in an airtight container. The punch base can be made up to 3 days ahead. For a kid-friendly version, serve the punch base without dry ice. For an adults-only version, replace ginger ale with sparkling wine or add vodka/white rum. To enhance the spooky effect, use a dark tablecloth and dim lighting.
