A comforting and flavorful skillet dish featuring ground beef caramelized with a sweet maple glaze, perfect for cozy dinners and quick weeknight meals.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound (450 g) 80/20 ground beef
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) pure maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) soy sauce
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) apple cider vinegar
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) olive oil
  • Pinch of red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Ingredients (5 minutes): Mince the garlic and finely chop the onion. Measure out the maple syrup, soy sauce, and apple cider vinegar.
  2. Heat the Skillet (2 minutes): Place your skillet over medium-high heat and add 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Let it warm until it shimmers but doesn’t smoke.
  3. Cook the Aromatics (3-4 minutes): Add the chopped onion to the skillet and sauté until translucent, about 3 minutes. Then add the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Add the Ground Beef (8-10 minutes): Crumble the ground beef into the pan. Spread it out and let it brown without stirring for a couple of minutes to develop a crust. Then stir and continue cooking until no longer pink, breaking it into small pieces as it cooks. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
  5. Make the Maple Glaze (2 minutes): In a small bowl, whisk together the maple syrup, soy sauce, and apple cider vinegar. Pour the glaze over the cooked beef and stir well to coat everything evenly.
  6. Simmer and Caramelize (5 minutes): Lower the heat to medium-low and let the mixture simmer, stirring occasionally, until the glaze thickens and becomes sticky, about 4-5 minutes.
  7. Final Touches (Optional): Add a pinch of red pepper flakes if you like a hint of heat. Stir and taste, adjusting salt or pepper if needed.
  8. Serve Immediately: Spoon the savory skillet ground beef over rice, mashed potatoes, or inside soft tortillas.

Notes

Use pure maple syrup for best flavor. Avoid stirring the beef too soon to develop a good crust. Keep heat moderate when simmering the glaze to prevent burning. For gluten-free, substitute soy sauce with tamari or coconut aminos. Leftovers keep well refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheat gently with a splash of water or broth.
