This rich, velvety hot chocolate is made in the slow cooker with simple pantry ingredients. A pinch of cinnamon and cayenne adds warmth without spice, making it a kid-approved treat that’s perfect for snow days, sick days, or any cozy occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups whole milk (1.4 liters)
  • 1 ½ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips (260 grams)
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk (14 ounces / 397 grams)
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder (25 grams)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract (10 ml)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ⅛ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • Optional toppings: mini marshmallows, whipped cream, chocolate shavings, crushed candy canes, or a sprinkle of cinnamon

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the unsweetened cocoa powder, ground cinnamon, cayenne pepper (if using), and salt. Sifting is even better if you have a fine-mesh strainer.
  2. Pour the 6 cups of whole milk into your slow cooker. Turn it on LOW to start warming.
  3. Add the semi-sweet chocolate chips and the entire can of sweetened condensed milk. Don’t stir yet.
  4. Sprinkle the cocoa powder mixture evenly over the top.
  5. Whisk everything together until the chocolate chips are mostly submerged and the cocoa powder looks incorporated. Don’t worry if there are a few lumps.
  6. Pour in the 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract and give it one more stir.
  7. Cover the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 2 to 3 hours. After 1 hour, give it a good whisk to help the chocolate chips fully melt.
  8. Just before serving, give the hot chocolate a final whisk. It should look glossy and smell incredible.
  9. Ladle the hot chocolate into mugs, filling them about ¾ full to leave room for toppings.
  10. Add toppings and serve immediately.

Notes

For a dairy-free version, use full-fat oat milk or canned coconut milk and dairy-free chocolate chips. The hot chocolate can be kept on WARM for up to 4 hours after cooking. Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 5 days and reheated gently. If the hot chocolate seems too thick after cooking, whisk in an extra ½ cup of warm milk.
