Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups plain hummus (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 small black olive (for spider body)
  • 810 small black sesame seeds (for spider legs)
  • 1 large cucumber, sliced into rounds or sticks
  • 2 large carrots, peeled and cut into sticks
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced into strips
  • 1 yellow bell pepper, sliced into strips
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes
  • 1 cup broccoli florets, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 cup snap peas or snow peas
  • 1/2 cup black olives (optional, for extra spooky vibes)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the platter: Choose a large round platter or wooden board and wipe it clean and dry.
  2. Spread the hummus: Scoop the 2 cups of hummus onto the center of the platter. Use an offset spatula or butter knife to spread it into a smooth, even circle about 6-7 inches in diameter, leaving a 2-inch border around the edges for the vegetables.
  3. Make the web mixture: In a small bowl, combine the 1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt with the 1 tablespoon olive oil. Mix until smooth. If too thick, add a tiny splash of water.
  4. Fill the piping bag: Spoon the yogurt mixture into a piping bag or a small zip-top bag. If using a zip-top bag, squeeze the mixture into one corner, then snip off a tiny piece of the corner.
  5. Pipe the spider web: Starting from the center of the hummus circle, pipe a straight line outward to the edge of the hummus. Repeat 6-8 times, spacing the lines evenly like spokes on a wheel. Then, starting from the center again, pipe curved lines connecting the spokes in a spiral pattern, moving outward until you have a full web.
  6. Add the spider: Place the black olive in the center of the web for the spider body. Arrange the black sesame seeds around it in a circle to form the legs (4-5 seeds on each side).
  7. Arrange the vegetables: Place cucumber rounds around the edge of the platter, overlapping slightly. Then arrange carrot sticks, bell pepper strips, cherry tomatoes, broccoli florets, and snap peas in small clusters around the hummus, grouping similar colors together for visual impact.
  8. Add final touches: Drizzle the smoked paprika over the hummus web for color and flavor. If using black olives, scatter them around the tray.
  9. Serve immediately or refrigerate: Best served fresh, but can be made up to 2 hours ahead. Cover loosely with plastic wrap and refrigerate. Let sit at room temperature for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Use room temperature hummus for easier spreading. Practice the web on a plate first if nervous. Cut vegetables into uniform sizes for a professional look. The spider doesn’t have to be perfect—a goofy spider adds charm. Keep vegetables cold and crisp by storing in ice water before assembling.
