Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 (6-ounce) salmon fillets, skin on or off
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ cup honey
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)
  • 2 tablespoons minced garlic (about 45 cloves)
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon water (for thickening, optional)
  • 1 pound fresh asparagus, tough ends trimmed
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ⅛ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds (for garnish)
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley or green onions (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Place your sheet pan in the oven while it preheats.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together the honey, soy sauce, minced garlic, rice vinegar, and sesame oil (if using). Set aside about 2 tablespoons of this mixture for brushing later. If you want a thicker glaze, stir in the cornstarch slurry and microwave for 30 seconds until thickened.
  3. Pat the salmon fillets dry with paper towels. Season both sides with salt and pepper. Place the salmon, skin-side down, on a plate.
  4. Trim the woody ends off the asparagus. Toss the asparagus with olive oil, salt, and pepper.
  5. Carefully remove the hot sheet pan from the oven. Place the salmon fillets, skin-side down, on one half of the pan. Arrange the asparagus on the other half. Brush the salmon with the reserved honey garlic sauce.
  6. Bake for 10 minutes. The salmon should be almost cooked through, and the asparagus should be bright green and starting to soften.
  7. Remove the pan from the oven. Brush the salmon with more of the honey garlic sauce. Switch the oven to broil. Broil for 2-4 minutes, watching closely, until the salmon is caramelized and flaky, and the asparagus has charred edges.
  8. Remove from the oven and let rest for 2 minutes. Drizzle the remaining sauce over the top, sprinkle with sesame seeds and fresh parsley, and serve immediately.

Notes

Preheating the sheet pan is key for a good sear. Pat the salmon dry to avoid steaming. Watch the broiler closely to prevent burning. For a thicker glaze, use the cornstarch slurry. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated in a 350°F oven or air fryer.
