A fun and spooky guacamole dip shaped like Frankenstein’s face, with olive eyes and carrot bolts. Perfect for Halloween parties, it’s creamy, tangy, and ready in under 15 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 ripe avocados
  • 1 lime, juiced
  • 1/4 cup finely diced red onion
  • 1 small Roma tomato, seeded and diced
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1 small jalapeño, seeded and minced (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 tablespoon sour cream or Greek yogurt (optional)
  • 12 to 16 large black olives, pitted
  • 1 small carrot, peeled
  • Tortilla chips or veggie sticks for serving

Instructions

  1. Cut and scoop the avocados. Slice each avocado in half lengthwise, working around the pit. Twist the halves apart and remove the pit. Use a spoon to scoop the flesh into your mixing bowl. Discard the skins and pits.
  2. Mash to your preferred texture. Using a fork or potato masher, mash the avocado until it’s mostly smooth but still has some small chunks. I like a few bigger pieces for texture. Don’t over-mash or it becomes baby food.
  3. Add the lime juice. Squeeze the juice of one lime over the mashed avocado and stir immediately. The acid helps prevent browning and adds that essential tang. Stir until combined.
  4. Mix in the aromatics. Add the diced red onion, diced tomato, chopped cilantro, and minced jalapeño (if using). Stir gently to distribute everything evenly.
  5. Season the guacamole. Sprinkle in the salt and ground cumin. Stir again, then taste. Adjust the salt or lime juice as needed. This is your chance to get it right before the presentation step.
  6. Add the sour cream (optional). If you’re using it, stir in one tablespoon of sour cream or Greek yogurt. This adds creaminess and a slight tang. It also helps the guacamole hold its shape better for the face.
  7. Shape the guacamole into a face. Transfer the guacamole to your serving platter or shallow bowl. Use a spoon or spatula to shape it into a rough oval or rectangle—like Frankenstein’s head. Smooth the top and edges. You want a flat surface for the eyes and mouth.
  8. Place the olive eyes. Take your pitted black olives and slice each one in half lengthwise. You should have two oval halves per olive. Press two olive halves gently into the guacamole where the eyes should go. Space them about two inches apart. For a creepier look, position them slightly closer together.
  9. Add the carrot bolts. Cut a small carrot into thin matchsticks or small rounds. Press two pieces into the sides of the guacamole head, near the neck area. These are Frankenstein’s bolts. Angle them slightly outward for maximum effect.
  10. Create the mouth. Use the back of a knife or a small spatula to draw a horizontal line for the mouth. You can also press in small pieces of olive or carrot to make teeth, but I usually keep it simple with just a slit.
  11. Serve immediately. Surround the guacamole with tortilla chips or veggie sticks. The dip is best eaten within an hour of making it. If you need to wait, cover it tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for up to 2 hours.

Notes

For best results, use ripe avocados that yield slightly to gentle pressure. Press plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the guacamole to prevent browning if making ahead. Add olive eyes and carrot bolts just before serving to keep them in place. If you don’t have a potato masher, a fork works well. For a dairy-free version, omit the sour cream or Greek yogurt.
