Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (226 g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 cups (400 g) granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup (75 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup (125 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 ounces (115 g) bittersweet or semisweet chocolate, chopped and melted
  • 1 cup (170 g) chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup (125 g) smooth peanut butter, room temperature
  • 1/4 cup (30 g) powdered sugar (optional, for peanut butter swirl)
  • 1 teaspoon milk or cream (optional, to thin peanut butter swirl)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease an 8×8-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper, leaving an overhang for easy removal.
  2. Melt the butter and chopped bittersweet chocolate together in a microwave-safe bowl in 30-second intervals, stirring between each until smooth and glossy. Let cool slightly (about 5 minutes).
  3. In a large bowl, whisk the sugar and eggs together until pale and slightly thickened, about 2 minutes.
  4. Pour the melted chocolate and butter mixture into the sugar and egg mixture, whisking gently until combined and smooth.
  5. Sift together the cocoa powder, flour, and salt in a separate bowl to avoid lumps.
  6. Gently fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture using a spatula until just combined. Then fold in the chocolate chips.
  7. In a small bowl, mix the peanut butter with powdered sugar until smooth. If too thick, add a teaspoon of milk or cream to reach a spreadable consistency.
  8. Pour half of the brownie batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly. Drop spoonfuls of the peanut butter mixture across the batter, then pour the remaining brownie batter on top.
  9. Use an offset spatula or butter knife to gently swirl the peanut butter through the batter, creating visible streaks without fully mixing.
  10. Bake for 30-35 minutes. Check doneness by inserting a toothpick near the center; it should come out with moist crumbs but not wet batter.
  11. Let the brownies cool completely in the pan on a wire rack for at least 1 hour before slicing for clean cuts and fudgy texture.

Notes

Use room temperature eggs for better texture. Do not overmix to keep brownies tender. Use quality chocolate for best flavor. Swirl peanut butter gently for a marbled effect. Tent pan with foil if edges bake too fast. Cool completely before slicing for clean cuts. Can substitute gluten-free flour and dairy-free chocolate for dietary needs.
