A quick and easy recipe for classic beef tacos with a homemade seasoning blend that delivers bold, smoky, and balanced flavors. Perfect for weeknight dinners or casual gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound (450g) ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • ½ cup (about 75g) finely chopped onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon oregano
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • ½ cup (120ml) beef broth or water
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 8 small taco shells or soft tortillas
  • Optional toppings: shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, shredded cheese, sour cream, sliced avocado, fresh cilantro, lime wedges

Instructions

  1. Mix the Homemade Seasoning: In a small bowl, combine chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, oregano, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Stir well to blend. Set aside.
  2. Sauté the Aromatics: Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and cook until soft and translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. Brown the Ground Beef: Increase heat to medium-high. Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it up with a wooden spoon. Cook until no longer pink and starting to brown, about 6-8 minutes. Avoid stirring too often so it gets a nice crust.
  4. Add Seasoning and Tomato Paste: Sprinkle the homemade seasoning mix evenly over the browned beef. Stir in 1 tablespoon tomato paste. Mix well to coat the meat completely.
  5. Simmer with Broth: Pour in ½ cup beef broth or water. Stir to combine and reduce heat to low. Let it simmer gently for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the liquid reduces slightly and the beef is nicely saucy but not soupy.
  6. Warm the Taco Shells or Tortillas: While the beef simmers, warm your taco shells or tortillas according to package instructions or in a dry skillet for about 30 seconds per side.
  7. Assemble and Serve: Spoon the seasoned beef mixture into the warmed shells. Add your favorite toppings—shredded lettuce, cheese, diced tomatoes, sour cream, avocado, cilantro, and a squeeze of lime.

Notes

If the beef mixture seems dry, add a splash more broth. If too wet, simmer uncovered a bit longer to thicken. For gluten-free tacos, use corn tortillas and check seasoning ingredients. To avoid soggy shells, warm just before serving and fill immediately. You can make the seasoning blend ahead and store for up to 3 months.
