These quick and easy pinwheels combine creamy cheese and savory sausage wrapped in flaky puff pastry, perfect for a warm, satisfying snack in just 15 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package (usually 2 sheets) puff pastry sheets, thawed but kept cold
  • 8 ounces breakfast sausage, cooked and crumbled
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (sharp cheddar or a blend)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley (optional)
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1 large egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water (egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Cook the sausage in a medium skillet over medium heat until browned and cooked through, about 6-8 minutes. Drain excess fat and set aside to cool slightly.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar cheese, garlic powder, dried parsley (optional), and freshly ground black pepper. Stir until smooth and well combined.
  3. Fold the cooked sausage into the cream cheese mixture until evenly distributed.
  4. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  5. On a lightly floured surface, lay out one sheet of thawed puff pastry (about 9×12 inches). If uneven, gently roll it out to smooth and even thickness.
  6. Evenly spread half of the sausage and cream cheese filling over the puff pastry, leaving about a 1/2-inch border on the edges.
  7. Starting at the long edge, carefully roll the pastry into a tight log. Use a sharp knife to slice into 1-inch pinwheels.
  8. Place the pinwheels cut-side up on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 1 inch apart.
  9. Brush the tops lightly with the beaten egg wash for a golden finish.
  10. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until the pinwheels are puffed and golden brown.
  11. Let them rest for about 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

Keep puff pastry cold to ensure flakiness. Use a sharp knife for clean slices. Rotate baking sheet halfway through baking for even browning. Leftover filling makes a great dip. For gluten-free, use gluten-free puff pastry. For dairy-free, substitute plant-based cheeses. Vegetarian version can use sautéed mushrooms or spinach instead of sausage.
