Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (440g)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons instant yeast (one packet)
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water (300ml, about 110Β°F/43Β°C)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 tablespoons baking soda (for boiling)
  • 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 8 all-beef hot dogs
  • Cheddar cheese sticks or slices (optional, use dairy-free if needed)
  • 1/3 cup rainbow sprinkles (about 55g)

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and instant yeast. Stir gently and let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Make the dough: Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir until dough starts to come together. Knead on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  3. First rise: Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  4. Divide and shape: Punch down dough and divide into 8 equal pieces. Roll each into a 10-inch rope. Wrap each hot dog with dough, sealing edges. Add cheese inside if using.
  5. Boil the bagel dogs: Preheat oven to 425Β°F (220Β°C). Boil water with baking soda. Boil each wrapped hot dog for 30 seconds per side.
  6. Egg wash and sprinkles: Remove from water, place on baking sheet, brush with beaten egg, and sprinkle rainbow sprinkles, pressing lightly.
  7. Bake: Bake for 15-18 minutes until golden brown and puffed.
  8. Cool and serve: Transfer to cooling rack for at least 10 minutes. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

Do not skip the boiling step to achieve authentic bagel chew and shiny crust. Use a slotted spoon to gently lower dough-wrapped hot dogs into boiling water. Press sprinkles lightly to help them stick. Avoid overbaking to prevent dryness. For gluten-free, use a bread-appropriate gluten-free flour blend. For vegan, substitute hot dogs, egg wash, and cheese accordingly.
